"Elena, can I borrow your Chapstick? Pero if it's not Fenty by Rihanna then I don't even want to look at it!"
—Flavio, The Funeral

"Seriously, this whole apartment is yellow? Somebody give Tía Divorce a color wheel."
—Flavio, The Funeral

Flavio Reyes is a minor character on the Netflix Original Series One Day at a Time. He is portrayed by David Miranda.

Physical Appearance[]

Flavio is a young Cuban-American boy, who has dark brown eyes, and deep brown hair. He has his hair swept up in a short fauxhawk. He is seen wearing a white shirt, and a black vest with a salmon-colored tie at the funeral.

Personality[]

Flavio is hinted at being gay, for liking stereotypical "girly" things, his interest in "girly" Chapstick, and his comments on the interior of Penelope's apartment. His mother, Estrellita is implied as being homophobic.

Bio[]

Flavio is Elena and Alex's second cousin, the son of Estrellita and Juan Reyes, and the grandson of Mirtha. After Elena says that Pilar is the only other gay person in the family, Flavio approaches and asks to borrow her Chapstick, as long as it's "Fenty by Rihanna," implying that he's gay because it's a gay stereotype for boys to like "girly" things like that.

Later, after Estrellita implies that it wouldn't make sense for Elena to stitch her name on the mantilla because Elena is gay, Penelope retorts implying Flavio is probably gay as well. Perfectly timed, he comments about the yellow design of Penelope's apartment and suggests Penelope should be given a color wheel. Once again, this implies he's gay because it's considered a gay stereotype for boys to like interior design.

Storyline[]

Season 3[]

In "The Funeral," at the reception, after the funeral, Schneider tries to overhear a conversation between Pilar and Susan. He tells Elena that it sounded like Pilar was moving to Tampa and Elena believes it's because the family doesn't accept her. Elena then says they have to do something to prevent Pilar from moving because she's the only other gay person in the family. Elena's cousin Flavio comes up to her and asks to borrow chapstick from her and she tells him not now.

Lydia and Mirtha hold hands and finish their song and everyone applauds. Penelope then tells Estrellita she is glad the stupid mantilla crap is behind them, Estrellita agrees and asks where the mantilla is, saying she wants to get her and her husband Juan's names stitched into as they didn't have it at their wedding. Penelope takes it out of Lydia's purse and asks if she will give it back after.

Estrellita then asks if she's getting remarried. Penelope says she might but she wants to save it for her kids as they are the next oldest in the family, so it makes sense. Estrellita asks "does it?" Penelope then questions what she means. Esterellta elaborates saying that doesn't make sense because Elena is gay and Penelope retorts implying her son Flavio is gay, a comment that clearly does not sit well with Estrellita. Flavio then makes a comment on the apartment walls in the apartment being yellow. This then leads to the two women fighting over the mantilla and Estrellita says Penelope and Victor's names should be removed as they are divorced.

Eventually, they learn that it wasn't the real mantilla, rather a random piece of lace, because there were no names on it. Pilar reveals she had it because she stitched her and her wife, Susan's names in it. This makes everyone apologize and stop fighting.

At the end of the episode, Estrellita makes a toast for Ophelia, but it shocked Penelope to learn that it was because she got to see President Trump "Make America Great Again," revealing that Estrellita is most likely a conservative Republican and supports the president.

The Politics Episode[]

Flavio appears in the animated special. He doesn't have any speaking lines, besides chanting "Make America Great Again" with his family during an imagined scene. When Penelope is practicing a speech to Estrellita, she mentioned that if Flavio was in the Walmart where a guy said he was going to shoot all of the Mexicans, he wouldn't have cared to stop and ask if Flavio was Cuban. He appears for real at the end, along with the rest of his family when Penelope answers the door. The conclusion of the episode is the Alvarezes, the Reyeses, and Schneider all embracing in a group hug.

Trivia[]

  • In "The Funeral," when commenting on the yellow walls of Penelope's apartment, he calls her Tía Divorce. He likely heard this name from other family members talking about Penelope's divorce.
  • His family is conservative and are Trump supporters.
